چکیده

The minimum linear arrangement problem is widely used and studied in many practical and theoretical applications. In this paper we present a linear-time algorithm for the problem inspired by the algebraic multigrid approach which is based on weighted edge contraction rather than simple contraction. Our results turned out to be better than every known result in almost all cases, while the short running time of the algorithm enabled experiments with very large graphs.  2004 Elsevier Inc. Increasing the Minimum Degree of a Graph by Contractions

The Degree Contractibility problem is to test whether a given graph G can be modified to a graph of minimum degree at least d by using at most k contractions. We prove the following three results. First, Degree Contractibility is NP-complete even when d = 14. Second, it is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by k and d. Third, it is W[1]-hard when parameterized by k. We also study its ...

A Multilevel Algorithm for the Minimum 2-sum Problem

In this paper we introduce a direct motivation for solving the minimum 2-sum problem, for which we present a linear-time algorithm inspired by the Algebraic Multigrid approach which is based on weighted edge contraction. Our results turned out to be better than previous results, while the short running time of the algorithm enabled experiments with very large graphs. We thus introduce a new ben...

On Bipartite Drawings and the Linear Arrangement Problem

The bipartite crossing number problem is studied, and a connection between this problem and the linear arrangement problem is established. It is shown that when the arboricity is close to the minimum degree and the graph is not too sparse, then the optimal number of crossings has the same order of magnitude as the optimal arrangement value times the arboricity. The application of the results to...

Edge-Dominating Set Problem

We study the approximability of the weighted edge-dominating set problem. Although even the unweighted case is NP-Complete, in this case a solution of size at most twice the minimum can be efficiently computed due to its close relationship with minimum maximal matching; however, in the weighted case such a nice relationship is not known to exist. In this paper, after showing that weighted edge ...

Inapproximability Results for Maximum Edge Biclique, Minimum Linear Arrangement, and Sparsest Cut

We consider the Minimum Linear Arrangement problem and the (Uniform) Sparsest Cut problem. So far, these two notorious NP-hard graph problems have resisted all attempts to prove inapproximability results. We show that they have no polynomial time approximation scheme, unless NP-complete problems can be solved in randomized subexponential time. Furthermore, we show that the same techniques can b...
